Write-a-Book-in-a-Day Contest

We wrote our book in a day!

The Write-a-Book-in-a-Day contest is a fundraising event for state children’s hospitals that runs from April to August each year. It began in Perth in 2003 and has since expanded across Australia. Teams of 5-10 writers are given 12 hours to collaboratively plan, write, illustrate, print and bind a book (of around 8000 words in the Open category, less in the schools categories). Donations raised by ACT teams go to the Paediatrics at the Canberra Hospital (PatCH) program.

The CSFG Team staged our entry for the the 2013 Write-a-Book-in-a-Day Contest on Sunday 4 August at a top-secret venue somewhere in Canberra.Patch logo

Well, actually, someone was teaching in the room at the ACT Writers Centre that CSFG normally uses, so we had to find somewhere else. But no matter because…

We raised over $870 for PatCH! Big thanks to everyone who sponsored our team!

This year’s entry went really well. It may have helped that our team included a few repeat offenders from last year, but the random story elements we were given seemed to fall together really easily and it was a fun day. Somehow we still barely managed to submit our story by the 8pm deadline (two minutes to spare), but everything felt like it went swimmingly.

The result is “The Mine and the Mirror”, included below as a PDF. Sometime in September we should have an idea of how our entry went in the contest (fingers crossed!)

Marvellous work, everyone – grotesque and yet adorable! What a very productive day you all had – well worth your sacrifices to physical comfort and Rob’s (improbable) restraint from punning. Congratulations.

You guys are amazing! Well done. Sounded fascinating. I’m sorry my RSI prevented me from participating.
